Artwork
I have been an artist and working in the creative arts for as long as I can remember. My artistic endeavors have covered the visual to the dramatic arts. My first love has always been the visual arts. As a teenager, I worked in oil paints and wire sculpture with sculpting always holding a fascination for me. After a sojourn in an acting career for about 10 years (which directly related to my therapeutic work in designing and executing workshops, breathing exercises, psycho-drama, etc.), I came back to my love for the visual art form. For me, living and life is intimately connected to the artistic process and expression. In the creative process, I constantly experience myself as being renewed, brought to unknown territory that is beyond the place from which I start. Working in different mediums helps me to expand what I already know. My real love has been the sculpture. The three-dimensionality of a piece, the complexity of working 360 degrees is a great challenge. I have experimented with many different materials including clay, wood, feathers, bone and semiprecious stones. I experience a special affinity for stone sculpture. I began my stone carving career in 1981, studying with Laurie Goulet at the Art Students’ League in New York City. Most recently I studied in St. Louis with Damian Manuhwa and Rachael Ndandarika of the Chapungu People of Zimbabwe. For me, stone has its own power and that is what attracts me to the medium. It is the depth, weight and intensity of this natural substance that speaks to me. I draw on this when I am working with the stone and I receive a sense of strength from the stone.I regard my stone work as primarily figurative in nature. I am fascinated with the intertwining of figures and faces and how they can both stand alone and merge into one another. This sculptural view gives to the piece a dynamic movement and content that emerge from the density of the stone, transforming the static-ness of the raw stone into movement. I invite you to experience the work on these pages. If you like what you see, let me know. If you really like what you see, then perhaps you would like to commission a work of art for your own home or workplace. I also invite you to come to the IAM Center to see the works in person, see works in process, or begin to create for yourself. Our wonderful facility has much to offer! Back to Artistic/Creative |
